Africa HEART (Health Education Africa Resource Team), was founded in 2000, as a Christian humanitarian organization empowering the people of Africa to survive the HIV/AIDS pandemic by providing medical care, education, and income generating activities to create a healthy, sustainable, disease-free life. HEART has offices in California, Colorado, and Kenya, with the compound and lodge in Nairobi, Kenya serving as the headquarters for Africa. Vickie Winkler, Founder, has been serving as the Executive Director for HEART since 2000, and she and the Board of Directors, are seeking the next ED as her successor.
The new Executive Director will report to the U.S.-based Board of Directors and serve as the leader of the organization for all HEART locations and staff. The ED will be responsible for all fundraising and resource development activities in North America and Kenya, and will also work closely with the Kenyan Board of Trustees overseeing the HEART Trust. The ideal candidate will not only have a heart for Africa, but will be able to understand and embrace the more relational culture in Africa and a desire to be immersed in African culture and service to the people of Kenya.
The new Executive Director will need to cultivate a close working relationship with the Founder and exhibit a willingness to be mentored by Vicki Winkler. Candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree, with a Master’s degree preferred, and 5+ years of professional P&L leadership experience with demonstrated success in nonprofit organizational leadership or relevant for-profit marketplace companies. He/she should also have proven experience in cultivating and expanding positive long-term business, ministry or community relationships through win-win solutions. Experience volunteering or working in Africa is strongly preferred, and the ability to travel between the U.S. and Kenya, and at times remain in Kenya for extended periods of time, is needed.
The ideal location for the new Executive Director is in Auburn, California, where the U.S. HEART office is headquartered. However, the Board is flexible about this location, as long as the candidate is willing and able to attend quarterly board meetings held at the U.S. headquarters.
